About Us

BREAD & ROSES: BAKING WITH PRECISION AND FLAIR

Bread and Roses are artisan bakers based in Alnwick in Northumberland. We specialise in the production of artisan breads, in particular, authentic naturally-leavened and sourdough breads.   Our naturally-leavened breads, available to retail customers at The Good Life Shop in Wooler, Alnwick Deli – The Cheese Room, and Scotts of Alnmouth , and The Running Fox Felton and Longframlington include White Levain, Five Grain Levain, Seeded Sourdough and 40% Rye with Caraway Seeds.   We also attend the Hexham Farmers’ Market on the second and fourth Saturday of every month. We are committed to using local ingredients where possible, as well as organic, and we make our standard brown loaf using Gilchesters’ wonderful Organic Farmhouse flour. We also specialise in rye sourdough breads and our range includes the wheat-free Moscow Rye, Borodinsky and Black Pumpernickel. All our rye flour is milled specially for us by Gilchesters.

We offer a range of breadbaking courses, delivered from our bakery on the Willowtree Industrial Estate in Alnwick, or occasionally from our home in Powburn if demand is made for utilising our wood-fired brick oven. We will show you all the traditional skills needed to bake your own artisan bread in your own home.

We bake real artisan rustic bread at our bakery in Alnwick. This is for sale locally and found across Northumberland on the menus of some of the finer eating establishments: The Jolly Fisherman in Craster, Shoreline Cafe in Craster and The Plough in Alnwick, The Ship Inn at Low Newton-by-the-Sea and Bertrams in Warkworth, Warkworth Old Post Office in Warkworth, St. Valery Guest House in Alnmouth, and the Running Fox cafes in Felton and Longframlington. You can find us and a wide selection of our breads at the Hexham Farmers’ Market and various village shows and food festivals throughout the year. We also offer talks, and demonstrations at a number of these events, so if you’d like to see us in action and get a few hints and tips, check our events diary, and we’ll look forward to seeing you there.

Please take the time to browse our website for more information about our real artisan bread, our bakery courses, and training and consultancy in all aspects of real artisan and industrial baking.
